This is a short list intended to inform you of the development status of AVC (aka h.264) in Matroska.
- MKVToolnix versions 1.0.2 and older do NOT support reading AVC at all.
- MKVToolnix 1.4.0 and newer can read AVC from MP4 files and put it into Matroska. It is an official release. Storage of AVC in Matroska will not be changed.
- Reading AVC / h.264 from an AVI (e.g. created with x264) will only use the "AVI compatibility mode". Playback of files muxed that way may or may not work. I will not accept bug reports for that. I do not know whether or not I will implement proper support for this.
- Playback on Linux/Unix works with mplayer's current CVS version. Note that 1.0pre6 cannot handle AVC.
- Playback on Windows needs the very latest version of Haali's Matroska splitter found on his website. Versions from approx. 2005-01-13 and newer should work.
- Playback on Windows also needs a decoder. There are two possibilities: Nero's decoder (preferred at the moment) or ffdshow. For ffdshow, you need at least the version from 2005-02-01 or newer. All older versions still have issues (e.g. choppy playback, the FPS value jumping all over the place, flickering subtitles etc). Download ffdshow from here or here.
